All tied together with boundary pushing production, A Broken Silence deliver a debut of world class standing.Hearing the recordings in their infancy, prominent singer/songwriter - and The Whitlam’s front man - Tim Freedman was so impressed by the group of musicians from Sydney’s West that he wanted to be involved. As well as inviting the band to support The Whitlam’s on their latest national tour, Freedman also collaborated on the heartfelt first single off the album titled ‘The Road is Lost’.Touching on many different topics and themes throughout, the album opener ‘Are You Not Entertained’ delves into the nature of the society we live in and the influence of celebrity in relation to violence, drugs and body image. Combining hard as rock guitar riffs, honest lyricism and melodic piano, ‘Are You Not Entertained’ is an apt indication of what the rest of the album has to offer. The social commentary continues with ‘Rat Race’ which looks at the pressures and expectations of modern living and ultimately the rewards of hard work.
Adding a little extra hip hop flavour to the record is The Herd’s Ozi Batla delivering an outpouring of appreciation for the country we call home. Keeping things positive, ‘This Nation’ pays credit where credit is due rather than focusing on the negatives and has a spirit and energy from start to finish. The title track of the album is a powerful number about life in the fast lane. Telling real life stories growing up in the West, ‘All For What’ discusses the bad choices some people make - often with tragic outcomes, -question if it was all worth it in the end. While ‘By Your Laws’ talks over the issue of divorce and how kids can be pulled between two parents who both believe they are doing the best by their kids.
