However, since the departure of original members Cliff Grigg and Craig Bloxom’s from the band in its touring form The Spys have been in limbo. Happy to play for their fans rather than succumb to the smoke and mirrors of stardom, The Spys chose not to charge people to come to their shows and their entire catalogue is downloadable for free from the bands webpage an act of insanity in a tightly guarded corporate music industry but that is the point. It is about the music and those that have loyally followed the band are fully aware that original member and song writer Michael Wiley is only interested playing not only his music but The Spys
songs like his life depended on it.Recently, one particular hard-core Spys fan got a
call from Shane Ladsman the Spys manager. They were looking for a new front man and this particular fan has had somewhat of a similar attitude to his musical career. He has worked closely with Rob Hirst and Midnight Oil as have the Spys he has also built a substantial following from slogging it out on the road is staunchly independent anti corporate
and writes songs with a philosophical and social conscience enjoying a loyal hard core following of his own. This fan and musican is Paul Greene. He started his career on the South Coast of NSW in a cover band at age 15 of which for the most part played Spy V Spy songs and since recently joining the band has had little need to brush up on lyrics. He played bass for many years, before going to solo acoustic guitar mode. He even practiced Graig Bloxom moves in the mirror as a kid. In fact the first gig that Paul Greene ever snuck into under age was
a Spy V Spy show at ANU age 15.The other recent fixture to the band is drumming
legend Paul Wheeler Icehouse Chiorboys Lo tel and many more who has been playing with the band
on and off since the Griggs departure in the late 80s.
